Another rough day at work, followed by flying to the gym, then flying to Girl Scouts to try to teach 10 7 and 8 year olds the importance of water conservation (and more importantly, the importance of keeping your butt planted while someone is trying to teach you about water conservation :-/ ), then flying home to deal with a work problem (thank goodness The Husband had dinner under control) then a 40 minute homework battle (complete with multiple timeouts, thrown notebooks, crocodile tears and hyperventilating, and screaming about how alphabetizing vocabulary words is TOO DIFFICULT TO EVEN TWY TO THINK ABOUT BECAUSE I HATE THE ALPHABET!!!!). As I sat on the couch after bedtime, drooling on myself and dreaming of deserted islands where my only companion is my never-empty pineapple filled with rum, The Child announced she was ready for Mommy to lay down with her. Sigh. I trudged upstairs and slowly climbed up the ladder to her single loft bed. She lay with her back to me. After a few minutes, she whispered Im sorry about the homework. Oh baby. Homework is finished. Tomorrow will be better. Nooooo!! I dont WANT to do homework tomorrow. Yeah. Me either. But it will be better tomorrow. (Please God.) She turned towards me and nestled her awkwardly long body into mine. I sang absently, and as she fell into sleep she curled her hand around mine. I lay there in the dark, all the tasks I still had to do twisting inside my brain, with my little-girl-who-thinks-shes-big wrapped around me. With every deep breath she took, I felt my own stress dissipate. Tomorrow will be better. And if not, then tonight - at least - we have peace
