SPIRITUAL ALZHEIMER’S Pope Francis issued a blistering critique denouncing the Vatican bureaucracy Curia in his Yule tide greetings to Cardinals, Bishops and Priests of the Holy See” listing 15 sins as “Ailments of the “Curia’.He stated that power intrigues have become a cancer, creating a spiritual vacuity that no theological degree can fill. X’Mas originated as a quiet family feast when people and friends from far gathered around sharing food,memories and experiences. Today many people are lonely and have no one to celebrate, except the ritual of midnight mass and a few cursory handshakes at the end of the service. Despite the mistletoe, lights and advent candles the true spirit of Christmas is missing. If we bother to look around we can see many who are homeless, who cant afford a decent meal, or dress shivering in the dark winter, trying to eke out a living despite terrible hardships. Yet many splurge on every conceivable luxury without a charitable thought. We shut our eyes to reality walking with a spiritual Alzheimer’s affliction to the world around, forgetting that a celebration is real only when we include those who are on the fringes of society. Real kindness and compassion is the essence and has to be rekindled in the yuletide spirit.
