Another social phenomenon which heavily impacted modern conceptions of social democracy also included nudity. The Greeks invented the common baths. The Romans developed them. At the height of classical Rome, every significant city in the empire had bathhouses. Bathhouses survived the implementation of Christianity, early barbaric invasions and the division of the empire. The city of Rome contained a number of bathhouses. In the time of Christ, Rome was a city of about 2 million. With paved streets and boulevards, shopping districts, fast food places, apartment buildings and businesses from around the world, Rome was bustling. So were the baths. After many barbaric invasions, by year 1000, Rome was decimated to a village of about 800. Most of the city had become ruins including the baths. Nevertheless, Europeans as well the founders of the US looked to classical Greece and classical Rome for the infusion of concepts for democratic government as well as social democracy.
