Another winning post from Jocelyn Goldfein. She gives Facebook the kid glove treatment here but I feel compelled to adopt a harsher tone. I have seen us repeatedly arrive at a steady state for some hiring pipeline and yet still find ourselves tragically shorthanded in some critical skillset which it is meant to serve. Inevitably what it takes to get back on track is to alter the criteria under which we source and interview candidates but doing that without fail leads to claims that we are lowering the hiring bar. The implications here are immense not only for engineering skillsets but for diversity in general. Thankfully at Facebook we have generally been able to forge ahead in spite of these concerns (even if I wish we didnt have to have the fight every time). We never lower the bar, we only come to realize the ways it was always inadequate and work to improve it.
