Anouk Smeekes 07 receives PhD in Social Sciences In May 2014 Anouk Smeekes, UCU class of 2007, received a PhD in Social Sciences from Utrecht University. Anouk Smeekes wrote a thesis entitled ‘The presence of the past: Historical rooting of national identity and current group dynamics’. Her thesis presents a series of both experimental and survey studies on how historical understandings of national identity among the native Dutch relate to their attachment to the nation, and their evaluation of out-groups and other social developments that potentially undermine national identity. She found that historical understandings of national identity provide an important basis for natives’ identification with the nation, but also drive tendencies to protect the national in-group against the growing presence of Muslim minorities and increasing European integration. uu.nl/university/college/EN/current/Pages/Anouk-Smeekes-PhD.aspx
