Answer to todays Grammar Challenge on the sentence, Elvis Costello is regarded to be one of the most influential song writers of the 1980s. ***** The main problem here is a matter of idiom. We say REGARDED AS, not REGARDED TO BE. Why? Just cuz. Thats why its an idiom -- its just the way we say it. If I had used the word CONSIDERED, it would be correct to say CONSIDERED TO BE, not CONSIDERED AS. Why? Right--idiom. Also, SONG WRITERS is most often written SONGWRITERS. I suppose some might argue that its not incorrect to separate the two, but SONGWRITERS, as a single compound, has been preferred over the two word compound for decades. I figured some might wonder about 1980s, but that is correct. Theres no need for an apostrophe (even though it is increasingly common, even in print publications, to include one).
