It is courtesy of oil and gas leasing rights. If ever a local community needed a financial shot-in-the-arm, it is Bellaire. The money has no strings attached, so it can be spent in any fashion village officials would like. In my Sunday column, I detailed how I would slice it up. Right off the top, $100K goes to balance the budget. I am big on safety, so the police and VFD were targeted in my spending blueprint, especially the police. Bellaires Blue has not received a raise is more than a decade. A strong community must feature quality police and fire departments. So I believe some of that money should go to the safety forces. I also channeled some for downtown facelifting, in the form of new sidewalks. As expected, I received some negative feedback to my spending agenda. It appears some people are anti-police. They dont believe an underpaid and overworked staff is deserving of a pay boost. That simply amazes me. It also disturbs me. I have the utmost respect for people who put their lives on the line in their respective professions. Military, miners, police and firefighters deserve hefty salaries. Every day may be their last. I hope Bellaire police and the VFD get a piece of the $455 pie.
