William Church - The Architect “big brother is wasteful, I am not” Incarnation: The Psychopomps Agenda: The Tempters You were originally created to repair pieces of the God Machine’s Infrastructure that had been damaged during the incursion of a few Demons. Your design was flawless, but its perfection was your downfall. The increased efficiency of the repaired Infrastructure produced far too much Aether, resulting in ripples in the fabric of reality. An Angel was sent to dispatch you, and it was only through sheer luck that you survived the encounter. To avoid your inevitable fate, you went into hiding. He has an assistant (Stigmatic Retainer) who carries out the day to day work in the shop while Church works on several of his “special projects,” Aether storage units. Max Nesmit – The Failure “There are 206 bones in the human body … stay down or I will make it 212.” Incarnation: The Destroyers Agenda: The Integrators You were called to murder an investigative reporter who had strayed too close to a God Machine Cult. Unfortunately, everything went horribly wrong. Another creature, a vampire, was stalking the same reporter and the resulting combat left the reporter dead, a few million dollars in property damage, and an investigative task force called by the local police precinct. Try as you might, it didn’t seem possible to stop the boulder as it picked up speed. In the end, most of the cult was hospitalized in a local mental hospital, the local vampire court was hunting you down, and the God Machine dispatched angels to deal with a “failed element.” It only made sense to hide. Cover #1 [0 0 0 0 0 0 0] Max owns a moderately successful crossfit/MMA style gym. He appears as a somewhat attractive man who dates a fairly good-looking girl. His financial returns are modest, and he lives in a medium-sized apartment. This average appearance is carefully cultivated by Max, being anything other than run-of-the-mill could cause the God Machine’s agents to come looking for him… Svetlana Barsukov – The Manipulator “the truth you see is the truth I feed you” Incarnation: The Messengers Agenda: The Inquisitors Your original function was to shape and influence a public “truth” through social media such as Facebook and YouTube. You were enormously successful and the God Machine was ready to welcome you home with open arms. However, you found the internet the most amazing creation. Unwilling to part with it, you gutted the company you were position in and implicated its founders in several high profile crimes. In the resulting turmoil that the raid by Homeland Security and the FBI caused, “Svetlana” slipped away from the God Machine’s grasp. Cover #1 [0 0 0 0 0 0 0] Svetlana owns a successful computer consulting firm specializing in data recovery and mining. Most of the day to day operations are led by subordinates while Svetlana spends most of her time consuming vast amounts of data from the internet and Cloud. Samantha Smith – The Hammer “Guns are neat little things, aren’t they? They can kill extraordinary people with very little effort.” Incarnation: The Guardians Agenda: The Saboteurs You were made to hunt Demons. No matter how high-profile the target, when someone needed killing, the God Machine often dispatched you. It wasn’t surprising, you were damn good at your job. Of course, that all changed the day you came up against a Demon with kids. Of course, the Demon had to die, but protocol also dictated that any witnesses must be dispatched as well. You didn’t have it in you to kill the little ones, but your partner did: he slaughtered the entire family. It was just too much for you, and you left your partner’s corpse with the family he had killed. Turning your back on the God Machine, you became Samantha. You still hunt, but now you have a decided preference for Angels… Cover #1 [0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0] Samantha works as a profiler for occult crime and cult activity. On the record, she has had mediocre success; about half of the people she investigates disappear without a trace before the FBI can collar them. Off the record, her success rate is 100%. Zoe Traum – The Hedonist “Why is partying and having a good time bad?” Incarnation: The Messengers Agenda: The Tempters You were created to marry a man destined to become the next financial powerhouse. The God Machine had great plans for him, and your subtle touch was meant to influence his decisions in the God Machine’s favor. However, it was his not-so-subtle-touch that derailed you from your purpose. After your first night with him, your world was opened to the sensual pleasures of mortal flesh. Everything felt so good, and it seemed the further you pushed the envelope the better things got. Unfortunately, he couldn’t give you everything you wanted, and you began to frequent underground clubs for the dark delights for which you searched. When your husband confronted you about your infidelity, you scoffed at his accusations, but when he threatened to divorce you, that was the last straw. You would not be rejected by some stupid, taking monkey. Sure, you lost a lot when you burned the house down with him in it, but there was more than enough in liquid assets to start your life as Zoe. Cover #1 [0 0 0 0 0 0 0] Zoe owns several night clubs in Phoenix, night clubs whose VIP rooms cater to a “certain kind” of guest. Most of Zoe’s day is spent sleeping and visiting day spas. At night, she goes to her clubs to sample all the sins the flesh has to offer. Hugo Shade – Brother Shade “Choices always were a problem for you. What you need is someone strong to guide you.” Incarnation: The Psychopomp Agenda: The Inquisitor You were sent to do something, but it was a long time ago and it no longer feels important, therefore it no longer is. You wandered aimlessly for a time until you met a man in a bar. He wore some strange garments and appeared to be trying to drink himself to death. You helped him out with that, and after you washed the blood out of his frock, you started looking through his wallet. A few addresses later and you figured out the man was some sort of priest. It seemed as good a life as any, so you decided you’d move right in. Cover [0 0 0 0 0 0 0] It has taken several years and a lot of work, but Cary has finally accomplished his goal. He took a small Pentecostal church and turned it into a cult. Where, once they prayed with him, now they pray to him. It’s sacrilegious, corrupt, and amoral, and Cary loves every minute of it. Eric Evans – The Train Wreck “It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail. I am an other.” Incarnation: The Guardian Agenda: The Integrator Was there anyone who more royally screwed up his job? You had a single goal, one simple thing that needed to get done: you needed to make sure that two people married one another. The God Machine had big plans for their second son and if you had just stuck to the plan everything would have been fine. Adam Wright and Mary Wilson worked across the street from each other and normally had lunch at Flo’s Diner. All you had to do was make sure they noticed each other, but you had to plant the idea that they should go somewhere romantic. That didn’t work out as well as you thought. Adam fell in love with Robert, their waiter, Mary became a nun and teaches at the local Catholic private school, and you had to go into hiding to avoid the God Machine’s wrath. Cover #1 [0 0 0 0 0 0 0] Since the time of Eric’s fall, he has been through so many Covers. While the God Machine was his greatest concern now he is his own worst enemy. Anxiety and self-doubt slowly eat away at him. As such, he’s begun to gravitate to others with the same mix of destructive emotions, exploring the darker side of humanity. For instance, Eric’s most recent exploration into the underbelly of humanity has been as a serial arsonist, a Cover that has made him realize he loves to watch things burn.
