Antibiotic Residue in Fruit May Trigger Allergic - TopicsExpress

Antibiotic Residue in Fruit May Trigger Allergic Reactions People with allergies to antibiotics may have to be careful about the fruit that they eat. A 10-year-old girl suffered an anaphylactic reaction after eating a piece of blueberry pie, and lab tests discovered the presence of antibiotic residue on the blueberries, but there was not enough to identify it, according to a research letter published in this months issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Researchers suspected streptomycin, which is commonly used in orchards to fight bacterial growth, and intradermal skin tests confirmed that it is an allergen for the child. This is just one case, but with the widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture, there could be more, said senior author Dr. Anne Des Roches of CHU Sainte-Justine Mother and Child University Hospital Center in Montreal, Quebec. medscape/viewarticle/831606?nlid=66006_1242&src=wnl_edit_medp_aimm&uac=129322EZ&spon=38
