Any farmer knows the harvest doesn’t end when the combine pulls out of the field. The corn still needs to be moved to market. And that’s beginning to be a problem. “It’s not a theoretical for farmers this fall,” says Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the soy transportation coalition. “It’s a tangible thing.” For decades, U.S. farmers have talked about the clear advantage they had over competitors in other parts of the world. Good roads, trains and river systems gave U.S. farmers a competitive advantage. But, cracks are beginning to show in that infrastructure. Some changes in the economy, such as the expansion of oil drilling in North Dakota, have put extra stress on that transportation system, especially railroads.
