Any speculations and misunderstandings about what exactly is happening in Ukraine can be dissolved very simply. When Putin first came to power his task was to fight raging banditism in then newly established and crime-ridden Russia. His genius plan was to give those bandits positions of influence in his system- political and business, in return for a simple favor- they do as he says. The plan worked brilliantly. Two birds killed with one stone- criminals left the streets (to go to government) and he gained some solid strings to pull. He implemented this plan ever since- in Chechnya(bandit and killer Kadyrov given presidency), in Ukraine (convicted criminal Yanukovich and his Donetsk mafia were put in charge) and recently so very blatantly in Crimea (Moldovan violent criminal Aksenov given presidency). People of Ukraine, at least those that bother, understand the game. What they are doing now is fighting with organised mafia machine. Simple. We need serious help here.
