Anyone for signing? : We the undersigned, as ex-members of the NKT and previous practitioners of Dorje Shugden ourselves, strongly condemn the protests against His Holiness the Dalai Lama by NKT members, currently operating under the banner of International Shugden Community, for the following reasons. We consider many of the allegations and insults the NKT/ISC level against His Holiness are actually a projection of all that is wrong with the NKT itself and with its leader Kelsang Gyatso. We thus consider their stance to be highly hypocritical and deceitful. The protestors shout “Dalai Lama Stop Lying”, but in reality it is they who are lying as explained below: 1) The allegation that His Holiness is “a liar” has no basis in anything His Holiness says or does. His Holiness holds a different opinion from Kelsang Gyatso and the NKT about the nature and history of Dolgyal Shugden. A difference of opinion does not equate to lying. To call his Holiness a liar because of this difference of opinion is a lie in itself. 2) The NKT/ISC claim that His Holiness has gone against all his teachers, broken his samaya and destroyed the lineage of Tsongkapa by rejecting the practice of Dolgyal Shugden. This is a lie. Having conducted extensive research into the history and problems of Shugden practice, His Holiness consulted with Trijang Rinpoche and explained the reasons why it was his duty to reject this practice. In fact, in this action His Holiness was actually following a course which Kelsang Gyatso himself states is absolutely correct and appropriate. In Clear Light of Bliss Kelsang Gyatso states: When deciding which doctrine to rely upon, we should not be satisfied with the fame or reputation of a particular Teacher, but instead should examine what he or she teaches. If, upon investigation, we find the teachings reasonable and faultless, we should accept them, but if they lack these qualities we should reject them, no matter how famous or charismatic their expounder might be. By contradicting his own advice and condemning His Holiness as a Samaya Breaker for rejecting Shugden teachings, Kelsang Gyatso reveals that it is he himself who is a liar, not his Holiness. Kelsang Gyatso also claims that by rejecting one particular teaching this means His Holiness is rejecting all Gelug teachings. His Holiness has not rejected all Gelug teachings and still holds his lineage gurus in the highest esteem. Kelsang Gyatso is lying. 3) In 2008 Kelsang Gyatso wrote to all his Dharma Centres stating that he personally was organising the NKT’s participation in the protests being organised by a front group called Western Shugden Society. All the Directors of WSS were/are members of the NKT. Yet NKT constantly lie that the NKT have nothing to do with the WSS. Kelsang Pema, Gyatso’s former assistant lied to journalists saying the WSS had no leader. Vociferous spokesman for the WSS, Nick Gillespie, former senior disciple of Kelsang Gyatso made a fraudulent propaganda film about alleged “persecution” of Shugden followers, purporting to be made by an unbiased journalist called Frank Delaney. This fraud was only revealed when the real journalist Frank Delaney came forward to expose the lie. 4) The 2014 NKT campaign is under the banner of a new front group called the International Shugden Community. The only official records of Directors of the ISC state that the Executive Director and Chairman of ISC are NKT monks based in Norway. The ISC front-man is a senior NKT monk named Kelsang Rabten. Kelsang Rabten disguises his ordained status and biased position in YouTube propaganda videos purporting to be “News” items in which he pretends to be a professional journalist. In one ISC video they use footage of Burmese monks conducting traditional alms-rounds to fraudulently misrepresent the situation in India regarding supposed “ostracism” of Shugden followers. 5) In 1998 Kelsang Gyatso stated that the NKT would no longer be involved in any further demonstrations against His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He admitted that the Shugden issue was, in reality, an issue of Tibetan politics and promised that the NKT would not take part in any further inappropriate actions. This was a lie because since then Kelsang Gyatso and the NKT organised two further rounds of protests, one beginning in 2008, and the latest round currently being staged. 6) His admission that the Shugden issue is one of Tibetan politics requires further explanation. Shugden worship is actively promoted by the Chinese dictatorship, which currently controls Tibet. The Chinese invasion and occupation has led directly to the deaths of over 1.25 million Tibetans. Today millions of Tibetans are still experiencing unbearable torture and repression under the vicious occupying Chinese forces. Most Shugden lamas actively co-operate in propagating the Chinese propaganda that conditions in Tibet are much “improved”, since they were “liberated” by China and that the Dalai Lama is somehow the villain of the piece. It is therefore not surprising that Shugden worshippers are considered with some hostility and suspicion by most Tibetans, who adore their Dalai Lama and deplore the devastation of their land, culture and religion wrought upon them by the Chinese. With the help of the Shugden lamas, Kelsang Gyatso and the NKT, the Chinese propaganda machine is attempting to white wash the brutal reality of their occupation of Tibet by vilifying, denying and discounting His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his extraordinary life’s work of love, compassion and peace in the world. 7) The allegation that the Dalai Lama is engaging in repression of Freedom of Religion is in fact more relevant to the way the NKT itself operates. The NKT Centres are like a closed shop of Kelsang Gyatso exclusive devotion. NKT centres and teachers are not permitted to study or teach any Buddhist books other than those written by Kelsang Gyatso. No teacher other than those trained and appointed by Kelsang Gyatso are allowed to teach in their centres. Ordained NKT people and others, are told they will go to hell if they leave the NKT. They claim they are not a cult. They are lying.
