Anyone like Frappuccinos? A coffee Frappucinno has 12 teaspoons of sugar! (13 oz size) A 12 oz soda has 11.. A 12 oz glass of OJ...11 A 12 oz Fruit smoothie...10 A 12 oz Lemonade..8 A 12 oz Gatorade....6 Ice cream (½ cup......seriously, whos having ½ cup!)...7 teaspoons of sugar!! What is sugar made of? Half of sucrose (sugar) is glucose and half is fructose. Remember that high fructose corn syrup is a 55 to 45 mix of fructose (sweeter sugar) to glucose. HFCS is also man made. Fructose is also significantly worse for us than glucose. First of all, fructose can only be metabolized (broken down into energy) in our liver......glucose can be utilized by every cell in the body! Because of this, fructose consumption (which is often a LOT AT ONCE) overwhelms the livers ability to metabolize it......and what cannot be metabolized right then and there becomes FAT. Also, remember from my video that muscle and liver are capable of storing a combined 2000 calories of glycogen (the storage form of glucose)........BUT.......fructose cannot be stored as glycogen.....which means that more of it turns into fat. Bummer. If that werent bad enough, fructose activates an enzyme in the liver which inactivates our ability to respond properly to insulin......which means insulin resistance. When we are resistant to insulin.....we MAKE MORE INSULIN.....which is linked to obesity, dementia, cancer, more rapid aging (because fructose forms bonds with important structural proteins all around our body....these are called AGEs)...........and diabetes. So, if fructose is so bad.......what about fruit? Fruit is healthy, right? Fructose is fruit sugar. The FIBER that is in fruit serves as an antidote......it forms a complex in the intestine which slows the rate of absorption of fructose into the body.....when fructose is introduced to the liver at a slower pace......the liver can METABOLIZE more of it to energy.......therefore less ends up turning into fat and causing health problems. What do I think about juicing? If youre using mostly fruit.....youre going to get a big load of fructose.....DEVOID of fiber. If you dont have the fiber......more fructose is going to slam into the liver and lead to potential problems. Juicing vegetables is better, but still missing the fiber. If you can, throw the whole fruit in so that you dont miss out on the fiber. Still want that sweetened coffee drink at S.........ks or that glass of OJ?
