Anyone who knows me is aware that I honor revolutions which have failed such as the Conspiracy of Equals, Easter Rising and Spartacus 1919. I believe that it is the goal of revolutionaries of today to realize their dreams. Yet I will not condemn revolutions which have taken power and succeeded such as Russia, China or Cuba. Often these revolutions are viewed from an ossified theory that condemns those who takes power and departing from their theory. How good is a theory which is encased in amber and not involved in current struggles? Rather, I applaud the revolutions of Russia, China and Cuba for taking power, defending themselves, and attempting to build an alternative. For to renounce the conquest of power is to leave it in the hands of the exploiting class. To refuse to defend a revolution is a criminal surrender to the counterrevolution. And to dismiss out of hand those who tried to build a new society because they didnt follow some prearranged blueprint is to ignore the perils of those who have to tread in paths theory has not anticipated. Our fidelity is not only to revolutions that have failed, but to those which have succeeded and faced the challenges of realizing their dreams in a hostile world. (Doug)
