Apex Predator? Not always...! This great white shark was chased away from a potential meal by two large gamefish! During an incredible flight along the De Hoop coastline on the 2nd day of 2015 I witnessed the shark approach a school of large leervis on the surface. Two of the fish immediately broke away from the school and swam straight at the shark. They took turns ramming it hard just behind its pectoral fins and kept it up until the shark moved away from the school. I was first told about this behaviour by conservation photographer Peter Chadwick and have previously photographed a great white being followed by two large yellowtail, but this is the first time I have witnessed the actual strikes. There is also a theory that the fish are using the sharks rough skin to rid themselves of parasites, but this incident definitely appeared to be defensive in nature. Nature is truly incredible! Alison Kock I wish you could have been there... #GreatWhite #DeHoop (P.S. The Facebook compression algorithm has done an appalling job rendering these images!)
