Appalachian Power Storm Preparation Update Wednesday, June 4, 2014 – noon Appalachian Power has taken steps to prepare for severe thunderstorms and strong winds forecast to move into its service territory later Wednesday. The storms have the potential to cause significant power outages in pockets. However, no widespread damages across the entire service area are anticipated. We are continuing to monitor the situation and make additional preparations as warranted. Weather Meteorologists are forecasting severe thunderstorms with winds in excess of 60 miles an hour beginning as early as 3 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m. in the Huntington and Charleston areas. The storms are forecast to hit the Christiansburg and Roanoke areas between 6 p.m. and midnight and Kingsport between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Thursday. Storm Preparation Efforts Appalachian Power is prepared to move additional crews and contractors into areas where storm damage and outages occur. In addition, the company is prepared to secure additional workers from outside its service area to assist in restoring storm-related outages should additional help be needed.
