Apparently, in 1968, the same year that the original hit, Wilson Pickett dropped in at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the producer was letting 22-year-old Duane Allman hang around and pitch in on guitar when the opportunity presented itself. They were unsure what to cut with Mr. Pickett when Duane floated the idea of putting their own spin on this all-time Beatles classic, which was admittedly a pretty ridiculous notion, seeing as how the original was still on the charts at the time. For some reason, everyone went ahead and gave it their best shot anyway, and the result opens with more soul than SIr Paul even managed to squeeze into Oh! Darling before trapdooring into a raucous coda with a sudden yowl that is still giving me goosebumps two days after first hearing it. A thousand thank yous to Vivek J.
