Apparently on Facebook if you say something is for breast cancer awareness it magically raises money for breast cancer research even if it has no remote connection to educating people about breast cancer, or best practices for treating or identifying it, OR for actually raising money to cure it. Just saying, this is for breast cancer awareness is enough. I usually hate the word slacktivism because I am quite certain that online arguments and discussions and visibility campaigns are hugely important and meaningful contributors to our having democratic public discourse and private, rigorous values formation. And real, staggering, charity can be accomplished online. But THIS play some ridiculous Facebook game with your status update FOR CANCER ploy is not just slacktivism, its more insidious. Its exploitative like those wretched forwards saying if you dont forward this Jesus will disown you in heaven or you will suffer 7 years bad luck. Its just disgusting. So, anyway. In the spirit of actually raising awareness about how to contribute to the cause of cancer reduction/elimination.
