(Appeal letter from a member of public to Mr President) ------------------------ Dear His Excellency Mr President, May I kindly seek your attention regarding the project at the Theinbyu ground, Mingalar Taung Nyunt. We heard that it is going to be a Hotel & Resident services apartments. If you really look at this impact on the community and environment, it is not beneficial to both. Prior to 1998, the ground was a public ground with multiple purposes; it was a football ground as well as community ground for traditional concerts, etc. Since the SLORC took over, it was turned into Car Driving Practice Ground. Now if it is going to be re-developed, it should be community-purpose development such as public football ground, swimming pool, recreational centre. The place surrounding is already condensed and the traffic is very congested. If the current project is to go-ahead, it will add burden to the already congested traffic. The project already started chopping down the trees in the ground. The trees serve as the natural air purification purpose and if the trees are to be replaced by the buildings, obviously it will be no good to the environment as well. There is three major hotels ( Chartium, Baiyoke Kandaw Gyi and Twin Tower) within one mile radius of the Theinbyu ground and there is no real need to add the hotel. But there is no proper public football ground within the proximity. If our country is to prosper in sports again in the region and beyond, we really need to think of our public sporting grounds. If our children can not play the basic sports like football due to lack of facilities, the future of our national sports can suffer.
