Appeal to Common Belief: The fallacy of arguing that just because most people believe a thing to be so, the thing is so, e.g. Everyone knows that Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue to prove that the earth is round. No matter how many people believe that, its still not true, he was trying to find a route to China on the basis that the earth IS round, which was a fact accepted by educated men in Europe. The Ptolemaic system of the universe was made up of a system of crystal spheres centred upon the sphere on the earth. Of course all navigational charts were flat, but thats the nature of a navigational chart. There are such things as common misconceptions.
