Appendix 8 Writing Workshop The writing process: 1. Gather information Good writing begins with gathering of good and exact information. Which are the details and facts (numbers) of the story you want to tell? Find out yourself all the facts. Visit yourself the People or the Place / SceneofEvent.Make a list of the important facts and place them in a logical order. 2. Starting and Focus on a theme Each story should have one dominant idea / Theme. Ask yourself: What is the main focus of the story? Write a headline with up to six-words for the story. This one sentence should tell the meaning of the whole story. Each Story needs an exciting or interesting start. Start the story with a discovery, or surprise, or with unexpected information. Each point should grow from the previous point and lead to the next one. End the story with hope and solutions for the future, without putting the reader under presser. 3. Difference between Story and Report Report and Story are two different writing stiles. A report is based on facts and results and details are not important. A Story must be written in a way that the reader can see and feel the situation with his inner eyes as he would be present in the situation. Small details and facts are very important, but they should not be listed, but rather intermingled in the text. 4. Write Write quickly from beginning to end. 5. Revision / Review Consider the following aspects before you release your text: • Will the reader of a different culture understand the story? (you need details for understanding) • Is any important information missing? • Is the story easy to understand? • Take a break, then come back and revise your writings. Remove anything that doesn’t belong to the story At a glance: Guidelines for clearer writing • One idea per sentence Do not try to include more than one thought into one sentence. • Limit sentence length Limit sentence length to not more than 23-25 words. If you can’t read a sentence aloud without breathing, it’s too long. • Do not use more than two numbers in any one sentence • Use quotes Quotes add credibility to anything you write. A quote is the exact words spoken or written by someone (guardians, students, children, local community persons or leaders) • Write your text timely An old story (from long time ago) is not interesting anymore. Try to work like the newspapers: Publish news immediately
