I few weeks ago, I fell off my horse and ended up in the ER. It was really not fun. Mostly because I recognized my error in the situation and felt like I let my equine partner down. And it hurt. Like, a lot. I felt guilty but also mad, because I felt like he let me down too. 16.2 hands is big. Its a long way down. Either way, there was a rupture in the trust and the relationship. Crappy place to be in. Both physical and mental pain. Slowly but surely, Shady and I have been re-building the foundation of our relationship. Lots of hand walking hikes, lots of ground work. And working on saddle fit, which was what led to the buck that got me off. Today, I actually got back on him for the first time. A bareback (plus rope halter) ride around the neighborhood. Could not be more proud of him. He took really good care of me, and I am learning how to better recognize my role in being what he needs me to be. I have to remind myself that he is just 5 years old, and I need to step up to the plate too. First step in the road ahead! Learning so much from this guy, very grateful. And he is just so damn cute to boot!
