Applicant response: Assalamualikum wa Rahmatullah Id like to register for the Islamicate with Dr Morsi event for the 16th of March and ongoing events that are to be held fortnightly thereafter. Dr Morsi provides a peering scholarly insight into the Muslim condition in the stateless, dispossessed and (post WWI) colonial context I as a Muslim find myself in. Sh Nuh says in this regard: Without a doubt, one of the greatest events in impact upon Muslims in the last thousand years is the end of the Islamic caliphate at the first of this century, an event that marked not only the passing of temporal, political authority, but in many respects the passing of the consensus of orthodox Sunni Islam as well. My point is much has been hijacked as a result of the Ummah has become orphaned in many ways. Nearly a century after this event the reality that has developed for the Muslim is a complex one, and to explain this reality, since practising traditionalist Muslims who specialise in anthropology, sociology and the like need to be sought after. Our reality is a quagmire of many large entangled issues which may have fiqhi responses but the average Muslim cannot grasp the reality itself with a wholesome understanding without the aide of specialists like Dr Morsi. His specialisations on the topic (the colonial setting, the Islamic subject etc) are rare (if not unmatched) in Australia and as a Muslim living in the West I can better appreciate my (privileged) position in relation to the Ummah and right many warped understandings of reality I must be holding onto, and it can inform my politics and views. I feel Id be a better Muslim as a result of these events and carry my Islam in a more potent and real way. I hope inshaAllah that I will be allocated a position in the study group.
