Applications are being accepted statewide for the Teachers Conservation Institute Series Lufkin, Texas - - Applications are being accepted for the 2014 Teachers Conservation institute Series. Sponsored by Texas Forestry Association, the Teachers Conservation Institute Series (TCI) are week-long summer workshops which showcase Texas Forest Ecology and Forest Industry. Hands-on activities that can be taken back to the classroom are led by foresters, educators, natural resource conservationists and industry professionals. All materials presented and received during TCI are correlated to TEKS and all teachers will receive 45 hours of SBEC credit and 45 hours of TEEAC Credit for each of the weeks they attend. TCI Phase I - This will be the 26th year for TCI Phase I which is an introduction to Texas forest ecology and forest industry. Join us for a week of learning about the entire life cycle of a forest through field trips to mills, logging operations, seedling operations, the forestry museum, a tree farm, and hands-on activities. Participants will be certified in Project Learning Tree and Project WILD and receive many resources to take back to their classroom. Phase I will be held August 3-8, 2014. Registration is $250 and includes all teaching materials and instruction, food, lodging and transportation during the workshop. Registration deadline is April 15, 2014. TCI Phase II - This will be the 17th year weve offered Phase II, a comprehensive look at East Texas forest ecology with some of the best foresters, anthropologists, wildlife biologists and education experts in Texas. Join other graduates from TCI Phase I for field investigations in water quality, best management practices, GPS applications, special wildlife management areas and a close look at cultural impacts on the forest. Participants will be certified in Aquatic WILD, become a facilitator in PLT and certified in LEP - The Leopold Education Project, with is an innovative, interdisciplinary conservation ethics curriculum targeted for grades 6-12 to create an ecologically literate citizenry. The LEP is unique in that it uses a classic environmental literary work, Aldo Leopolds A Sand County Almanac to reach students with a conservation ethics message that strives to instill an appreciation for the land community. All investigations are designed to be easy to use in the classroom and help answer the question, What are the best uses of Texas Forests? Phase II will be held June 22-27, 2014. Registration is $300 and includes all teaching materials and instruction, food, lodging and transportation during the workshop. Registration is limited to 20 participants and closes April 15, 2014. TCI Phase III - This will be the 2nd year weve offered Phase III and it will not be offered again for five years. Join other graduates from TCI Phase II for field investigations both in and on the water in water chemistry, aquatic biology and streamside best management practices. The focus is on the state of water in Texas, a critical issue. Participants will be certified in Project WET 2.0, Leave No Trace and WOW The Wonders of Wetlands. Phase II will be held July 6 - 11, 2014. The cost is $300 and includes all teaching materials and instruction, food, lodging and transportation during the workshop.
