Approaching God .... MARCH 10 INERRANCY IS IMPORTANT The Scripture cannot be broken. (John 10:35) A prominent theologian has commented on Jesus remark that the mustard seed is smaller than all other seeds (Matt 13:32). He says, Botanists know of seeds even smaller than the mustard seed .... Jesus in his omniscience, knew perfectly well that there were smaller seeds, but he used this facet of the culture of the people to whom he was speaking .... Had Jesus spoken of the seed which was indeed the smallest, he would have been scientifically more accurate. That remark represents two problems. If the thesis is correct, then there are errors in the Bible. Further, it also suggests Jesus was a deceiver. But the mustard seed is the smallest cultivated seed. That illustration reveals the importance of inerrancy. The character of God is at stake. If the Bible is in error, then it impugns the character of God. It makes Him to be a liar. If the Bible is not inerrant, then we should want to know what those errors are. What if there are errors in doctrinal statements? If Jesus wasnt accurate in His statement about the mustard seed, how can I know He was accurate in saying, He who believes in the Son has eternal life (John 3:36)? Not only is the Bible entirely accurate and without error in everything it says—scientifically and historically as well as doctrinally—but Jesus was accurate in every statement He spoke. He did not deceive His hearers. In telling the disciples about the heavenly home He was going to prepare, He assured them of the truthfulness of His words, saying, If it were not so, I would have told you (John 14:2). Those words can be applied to all other areas. If it were not so, Jesus would have told us. The doctrine of inerrancy is important, and we can believe it. And because of that we can believe all the precious doctrinal truths of Scripture. LESSON: Inerrancy is important because the Bible claims to be inerrant; if it were not inerrant we could not be assured of our beliefs.
