Approximately 400 middle school musicians registered to audition for All County Orchestra yesterday. I think its phenomenal that so many young musicians want to participate and took the time and energy to prepare the challenging audition pieces. Ms. Strom, orchestra director at Benito MS and Zoes youth orchestra conductor, was singlehandedly checking in the middle schoolers and was beyond overwhelmed. Z said she could get herself prepared for her audition so I could jump in and help with registration. After Z finished, she wanted to help, too, which we desperately needed. While Ms. Strom checked in students on her laptop, I distributed registration numbers, and Z briefed her peers and their parents on the audition process, handed out maps, and helped them find their audition rooms. Im proud of all the hard work she put into preparing for her audition, but even prouder that she saw a need and didnt hesitate to jump in to fill it. We arrived at 4:30 and didnt leave until registration closed at 8 pm. Her audition was done by 5:45. The line was seemingly never ending, and many parents complained. Guess how many volunteered to help? I always tell her that you can choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution, and I am so happy that she made the right choice last night! 😍
