April, 2006... “Hey, little girl, want some candy?” Tracey’s head popped up, jerkng out of her little reverie. Okay, so she was fantasizing about the crew of the Serenity loose on board the Enterprise. Spock and River would have some hilarious conversations… “My mama taught me not to accept candy from strange men,” she deadpanned. Matt chuckled, not much of his face visible between the goatee and the goggles. The yellow monstrosity he had pulled out of the junkyard this weekend didn’t have a windshield, it seemed. And the camper on the back of the pickup had been partially disintegrated when the previous owners had rolled it. At least, Tracey hoped they’d rolled it. The only other explanation she could think of for that kind of damage was lightning, or space junk. “And it doesn’t get much stranger than you.” The truck crawled along the road, keeping pace with her for a few feet. “What about explosives?” She stared back at the sidewalk in front of her, pretending not to smile. She could see him holding out a red cylinder out of the corner of her eye. “Can you accept dynamite from strange men?” No. She had a backpack full of homework. And the ACTs were next week, she HAD to study. But she had darted around the front of the jalopy before she’d even really realized what was happening, climbing into the cab through a mangled door as soon as the brakes had stopped squealing. “Take me, I’m yours!” “Christ, Tracey! Don’t do that, I could have hit you!” Matt barked, his voice about half an octave higher than normal. Tracey ignored him, frowning distractedly at the inside of the truck. “Ew! Is this a Nissan?”
