April is Autism Awareness Month. Its a month for appreciating the blessings in your life, and also for understanding the struggle that others face every day. While many think of Autism Spectrum disorders as a joke, theyre serious and have an impact on the lives of the people touched by them. About 1 in every 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder, according to estimates from CDCs Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. Not only that but 1 in 6 struggle with any mental hindrance that ranges from mild - symptoms of which include social impairment, difficulty expressing emotions, and decreased capacity for multi-tasking - to severe - which include the inability to speak, or perform daily activities. Please take the time out of your day to think of these individuals, and the complications they face every day. Although they do not seem to struggle outwardly, those whose lives have been touched by Autism understand the day to day struggle of feeling different. If you know someone who has Autism, please be there to support them. Anyone can reach out and get involved with organizations such as POAC, and other Autism awareness organizations. Just remember, these individuals are different. Not less. ~Temple Temple Grandin
