Are we a model moderate Muslim country? ShareThis Posted on 14/01/2014 - 14:16 By Yeoh Guan Jin--- Are we a moderate Muslim country? KUALA LUMPUR: A supermarket in Kuala Lumpur recently introduced a system that segregated trolleys into “halal” and “non-halal”. The move was to address concerns among Muslims that non-halal food items, particularly pork, may contaminate the trolleys. Muslim shoppers have welcomed the move. However, non-Muslims are less concerned about which trolley they use, and many pick trolleys without checking the label. The supermarket that has segregated trolleys into “halal” and “non-halal” is actually one of a chain of 13 outlets across Malaysia that are owned by NSK Trade City Sdn Bhd. However, the system has been implemented in only two outlets as the others do not carry non-halal products. At this particular supermarket, non-halal products are sold at a corner separate from the main section. Apart from that the entire shop floor has only halal products. For all the effort expended on providing “halal” and “non-halal” trolleys, there does not seem to be any attempt to enforce the system strictly. Workers who have the task of collecting the trolleys from the car park push the two types of trolleys together anyway. “It is unnecessary, almost extreme,” says Islamic Renaissance Front chairman and director Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa when commenting on the segregation of trolleys system. “Soon, we will see ‘halal’ and ‘non-halal’ parking (if this is allowed to go on).” This article was first published in the Oct 12 issue of The Heat.
