Are we capable of handling a lump sum of money if given to us? Some of us may, some of us may not. Some may argue we should be given that option to choose and if we choose to spend the money away, its our choice. But who will bear the burden of our irrational choices? Surely, we will have to seek financial assistance then. Should the government accede to such requests or ignore it? Its a vicious cycle if the government has to bear the burden of our irrational choices and if it choose to ignore the individuals, the government unfortunately will still be blamed for not being mindful or thoughtful of such individuals. Hence, as a prudent approach, what the government is trying to do, in the context of CPF, is to assist us in the financial planning for our future. We must seek to understand the greater good of a policy rather than to focus on its cons. I agree that no policy is perfect and it should be constantly reviewed so as to make it up to date but we should not scrap a policy if there is inherent good in it, though it may seems unpopular in the first stance.
