Are you a forgetful person? By this, I mean, are you someone who easily forgets where you placed things, what you did, or what you said? Do you forget special days and occasions? Forgetfulness can be attributed to information overload or lack of concentration. Our devotion this morning speaks to us about the problem of forgetfulness. There is the DANGER of forgetfulness. Psalm 9:17 tells us that the nations that forget God shall be turned into hell. To forget God is to leave God out of your life. To forget God is to say you do not need God. To forget God is to be unthankful and ungrateful. To forget God is to foolishly try to accomplish things on your own. Forgetting God can result in missing the opportunity of calling on the name of the Lord to be saved. There is the DECLINE in forgetfulness. Forgetting God leads to our spiritual decline. It leads to an increase in self-dependency instead of self-denial. We trust in our gold rather than in God. We trust in our money rather than the Master. We walk by sight and not by faith. When Israel forgot God, they trembled in the presence of their enemies. When Israel forgot God, they murmured in the wilderness. Forgetfulness leads to our decline. There is the DESTITUTION in forgetfulness. When we forget God, we impoverish our souls! When we forget God, we rob ourselves of God’s blessings! When we forget God, there are no answers to prayer! When we forget God, we sow much and bring in little, we eat but have not enough, we drink but are not filled with drink, we clothe ourselves but are not warm, we earn wages only to put the wages in a bag with holes. There is the DEPRAVITY in forgetfulness. God warned Israel against becoming forgetful once they settled into the land of promise. God told them that the day they forgot God, they would walk after other gods, serve them, and worship them. He said in that day they would perish. To forget God is a sin! To forget God is spiritually reckless and arrogant. It is sinful and wicked to be forgetful of God. There is the DELIVERANCE from forgetfulness. How can we do this? Make it a point to begin and end each day by listing everything you can thank God for. Keep a list of things you have, people in your life, opportunities you have been given, and things you have been entrusted with for which you can thank the Lord. A devotional life that is strong in praise, thankfulness, and worship is the surest antidote against the forgetfulness of God. “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God.” Are you someone who has drifted into forgetfulness of God? Then maybe it is time to “jog your memory” and remember that, without God, you would not have gotten as far as you have in your life. It would be a good time to be thankful for all the things God has blessed you with and done for you. Pastor Alan Fong Heritage Baptist Church San Francisco, CA youtu.be/Ix-on0u5g5Y
