Are you functional or dysfunctional? The functional members of God’s family know their place and who they are in Christ. They know their authority and walk in it. The dysfunctional family members lack the deep sense of belonging. They don’t know who they are, how they fit in or what authority they have. Dysfunctional Christians are like those under bondage. They think, speak and act like hirelings or slaves instead of living in the freedom and authority of sons and daughters. Paul talked about this and said: ‘Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods, but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more?’(Galatians 4: 8, 9). If we choose to walk in worldly ways, or in what the Bible calls ‘according to the flesh’ (Romans 8: 13), we willfully re-present ourselves to the bondage of satan’s sinful domain. But Jesus said, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not continue in the house for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed’ (John 8: 34 – 36). Where Jesus has set us free from the bondage of slavery and brought us into the adopted family of God, He has made us heirs of His freedom. It is both short sighted and costly to fall back to our old worldly ways. As heirs we inherit the rights and privileges of heaven so that we can do the same supernatural works that Jesus, our beloved brother did.
