April 23 (12-1:30 PM in UL1126) Designed to aid you in the development of a teaching philosophy, a brief narrative describing values, goals, & beliefs regarding both teaching & learning. Goals: address ways to document & reflect on one’s teaching as well as provide strategies for drafting & revising a teaching philosophy statement. Bring a copy of his or her current statement for discussion and review. If you don’t have a statement, the presenters will help you get started. Creating a Syllabus Online: Thursday, April 24th (11:30 AM-12:15 PM) A syllabus is often the first impression that students form of a course, and it serves both faculty and student as a guide to & contract for the semester. A well designed & personalized syllabus can help faculty set the proper tone while simultaneously helping them avoid having to repeatedly answer basic student questions about expectations, policies, & deadlines. Goals: offer tips and considerations for effective syllabus design with questions & discussion at the end. First Day of Class Online: Thursday, May 1 (11:30 AM-12:15 PM) The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the semester. It’s an opportunity to set learners’ expectations, establish a feeling of community, & give students a taste of course content. Goals: focus on ideas & activities that instructors can use to get a course off to a great start. Time for questions & discussion will follow. Planning a Class Session Online: Thursday, May 8 (11:30 AM-12:15 PM) A well planned class session helps reduce faculty stress while increasing student ability to recognize & meet learning objectives. Whether planning a discussion-based seminar, an activity-focused lab, or a two-hour lecture, a carefully structured & organized class session will enhance the learning experience. Goals: learn the principles of quick & effective class planning. Questions & discussion at the end.
