Are you living your Passion? I have lived in Durban all my life so seeing guys and girls surfing the waves of Durban on blistering hot or freezing cold days is the norm. They seem to enjoy themselves taking great pleasure in riding waves with their family and friends for several hours. Whilst growing up for me surfing was a leisure activity something you do as an add on to your normal life I never considered that surfing is a multi-billion dollar industry that sees people travelling all over the world competing for high scores. Big wave surfing is a division of surfing in which people ride BIG 6mins high and above waves. Now Big wave surfing is slightly different to normal surfing in which the glory is attained by who can ride the biggest waves in the world. Laird Hamilton is one of the legends of this division. He has one of the biggest recorded rides at Tahitis Teahupoʻo break(check Wikipedia). He travels the world riding waves that look like special effects on some blockbuster movies. Why would someone risk their life paddling in water and riding waves that seem like they’re exclusively for demi-gods well because it is his passion? He is so used to living his passion and fulfilling his dream that doing something else would be death. Tony Hawk the Birdman was a former American skate boarder who is still today living his passion. Even though he is retired from competitions he is still active in the sport having video games and launching exhibitions all revolving around the sport he loves. The great thing about these two men is that they took what I perceived to be an add on to life and turned their lives into a limitless adventure. There will be people out there who don’t understand your passion in Laird case big wave surfing they want you to have a safe passion something that will allow you guaranteed income, guaranteed predictability. The only thing predictable in life is death. Live your life following your passion however big or extreme. Live your life as if you’re riding a Big Wave.
