Are you (or do you know a graduating senior or recent alum who is) interested in minority and human rights, who might be interested in applying for a 4 week award for a program following graduation? If so consider Humanity in Action! Below is information about the Humanity in Action Fellowship, a unique opportunity for university students and recent graduates to study minority/human rights in an international setting during the month of June 2014. Since 1999, Humanity in Action has awarded more than 1,300 competitive fellowships to outstanding college students and young professionals from universities in the United States and Europe. Recipients participate in an orientation hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, DC and a month-long human rights fellowship program in one of five European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw. Applications will open in September 2013 for next year’s Humanity in Action Fellowship. humanityinaction.org humanityinaction.org/apply ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of college students and recent graduates to explore different national histories of discrimination and resistance to injustice, as well as examples of contemporary human rights issues affecting minority groups. The programs are intended to instill a responsibility among Humanity in Action Fellows to recognize the need to protect minorities and promote human rights in their own communities and around the world. The Humanity in Action Fellowship includes: -A two-day orientation in Washington, DC at the Council on Foreign Relations -A four week fellowship program in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris or Warsaw -Daily lectures and discussions with leading academics, journalists, politicians and activists -Site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums and memorials -Participation in the annual Humanity in Action International Conference -A final project in which participants research and publish in-depth articles that draw attention to issues that were explored during the Fellowship The educational and professional benefits of participation in the Humanity in Action Fellowship extend far beyond the program itself. After the Fellowship, participants are invited to join a global Humanity in Action alumni community. As alumni, Humanity in Action Fellows are able to participate in ongoing educational opportunities and special professional fellowships, such as Humanity in Action internship programs in the U.S. Congress, European Parliament and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Nearly two thirds of Humanity in Action alumni have received a professional opportunity through their participation in the Humanity in Action Fellowship. ELIGIBILITY Applicants to the Humanity in Action Fellowship must be currently enrolled sophomores, juniors, and seniors or recent graduates (undergraduate classes of 2012 and 2013) at accredited, four-year undergraduate colleges or universities in the United States. In the coming year, Humanity in Action will award fellowships to approximately 40 outstanding scholars from the United States.. Selections are made on the basis of demonstrated commitment to social justice, evidence of leadership potential, significant academic achievement, entrepreneurship and social maturity. In 2013, Humanity in Action received more than 550 applications and awarded 42 fellowships to students representing 37 academic institutions. Students of all academic disciplines, interests and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Humanity in Action covers the costs of participation and accommodation during the fellowship and provides financial aid to cover travel costs for those with demonstrated need.
