Are your new plants looking sad? After the Baton Rouge areas long, cold winter there has been a flurry of new plants planted in flowerbeds and landscapes this spring. Whether its annuals, perennials, shrubs or trees all consumers want to have success and healthy looking plants. Now that milder weather is behind us and the temps are approaching 90 degrees, many plants will begin to struggle due to our intense summer. Below you will find common symptoms and probable solutions. Symptom Problem Solution Lower/mature leaves turn yellow & drop off Not being watered enough or deep enough Always soak the plants root system Leaves turning black from top to bottom Too much water or inadequate drainage Make sure root system dries out between watering Well watered plant wilting Root rot - not enough active roots to supply the plant above ground Trim back and lower water frequency or plant higher to improve drainage Leaves turn black very quickly & then drop off Chemical burn from fertilizer, herbicide or animal urine Leach the soil - place a hose at the base of the plant & water for a LONG time to dilute the chemical Other than these self-diagnoses, the easiest way is to bring a picture or a part of the struggling plant into one of our locations and talk to one of our professionals.
