Arledge Gets Win in Circle, Grand Slam on Field By Justine Gaskamp Portales, N.M. — Sophomore pitcher Samantha Arledge had a great day for the Aggies Tuesday as they took on Eastern New Mexico in a double-header on the road; the series was split with OPSU taking the win in game one 8-2. Arledge pitched a full seven innings in game one allowing the Zias only one earned run and throwing five strikeouts. The Aggies totaled ten hits to ENMUs seven. Game one remained neck and neck through the fourth inning with the score tied at two apiece. Madison Heathington doubled in the first bringing Anyssa Barbosa in for the first run of the day. Heathington then drove another double in the third inning to score Rachel Thompson who also reached base with a double. ENMU opened the fifth inning by walking three Aggie batters and advancing a fourth on a fielders choice; Lilli Ward came across as Salina Galindo reached on the FC with bases loaded and Arledge on deck. Arledge steps up and smacks a grand slam home run to centerfield scoring four and sealing the win for the Aggies; neither team scored in the final two innings. The Zias made quick work of the Aggies in game two scoring eight runs in the first inning alone. The Aggies remained scoreless through the top of the third when Kolbi Graves and Anyssa Barbosa each crossed home plate putting OPSU on the board and down by six (8-2). ENMU brought in four more runs to close out the third; enough to end the game in five innings with a score of 12-2. Taylor Richardson led off in the circle for the Aggies in game two pitching 2.1 innings. Arledge relieved Richardson with one out in the third and finished the game with zero hits and zero earned runs. Leading the series in hitting for the Aggies was Lilli Ward who went 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored; Kolbi Graves followed batting .500 (3-4) and scoring two runs. Arledge led the series in RBI with four. Rachel Thompson led the Aggie defense with a total of ten putouts from first base. Arledge has racked up nine home runs this season which currently ties for fourth in the conference; Heathington is close behind with eight. The Aggies now own a 9-31 overall record with one conference win. Aggie softball will enjoy a small break this weekend and will return to their home field next week for a Heartland Conference series against Lubbock Christian. The Aggies will host a double-header Thursday, April 17, starting at 2 p.m. and will continue with game three on Friday, April 18, at noon.
