Arlington Public School group from Dutchess County, NY to build 2 homes in Jinotega, Nicaragua. A group of friends and family from the Arlington Public School District will be taking off on July 19th! This group of 15 volunteers will be spending a week in Sasle, a small community in the department of Jinotega, Nicaragua. These dedicated workers will be putting their efforts towards constructing two new homes for families in need. Bridges applauds the hard work and service Arlington is putting forth for this community. The Sasle community is also very grateful for the volunteers. Sasle is a rural area in Northern Nicaragua; its isolation contributes to many of the health and economic issues citizens face each day. 16% of the population is reported to be living in extreme poverty. In these situations, homes are often assembled from scrap pieces of wood, with tin roofs and dirt floors. They can lead to the spread of disease and often stand no chance against severe weather. When Arlington arrives in Jinotega, they will get right to work on resolving these problems for a few. With the construction of two new homes, families will be able to live in a safe and sanitary residence. As part of their service learning, volunteers will take the time for daily reflections where they will speak to and hear from locals about their daily struggles, their greatest accomplishments, and some of their hopes and dreams. This will allow for new insights and understanding of the world around them. Upon return to the U.S., volunteers will have gained a new appreciation for both their own way of life, as well as that of others.
