Around the globe "shame-based" societies have had a difficult time becoming Christian. (ie. Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan, etc.) What is the difference between shame based nations and guilt based nations? Its huge... and most people preaching the gospel in shame based societies are from guilt based nations!! Trying to use guilt to try and motivate someone to the cross does not work too well in shame based nations. “Guilt is an awareness of failure against a standard,” such as a rule or a personal expectation. But shame, is “a sense of failure before the eyes of someone else.” Shame is overtly relational. (David Powlison)
