Around what age did your dog start to act more protective over its territory? I cant stand my neighbors. They make ZERO effort to contain their dogs. We have talked to them several times. They put a mattress on their back porch to attempt to block one in....that was it. Their Bassett hound has never ventured into MY backyard before, as it is roughly 1/2 an acre from my house to theirs. (I have almost 2 acres but our property lines run parallel to each other.) Well today their dog Cecil, whose name I know because all they do is stand on the porch and yodel his two syllable name, went in my back yard. Where my chickens free range and my goats are. I was alerted to this by my Chinese crested who was standing up barking at the back window. I run outside to yell at (and possibly apprehend) the hound and he takes off. Running right past my 2 farm guard pups who were sitting under and beside the porch watching him. -_- Now, they are only about 4 months old so I certainly dont expect them to do anything as far as confronting another dog. Im not upset, I dont think I have dud dogs, Im just wondering when I can possibly start expecting a little more than hey look, another dog... The male has barked at several things at night. Should I be doing anything to reinforce a protective instinct?
