Arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam yesterday at 11 pm, and it was raining. Pleasantly. Phone conked off and couldnt find my bearings so went into a cafe with all my bags. and asked them if theyd let me charge my phone. They did. Suddenly, the lady at the cafe came and gave me something to eat. When I said I didnt want and id leave soon, she insisted I eat. So I did, wondering how much it would cost me. Later when I was leaving, I asked her how much I was supposed to pay, she wouldnt take money at all. In broken english, she told me that it was my first day in her city and she wouldnt take money. Today, early in the morning, when I left the building, an old lady came out of her house and waved goodbye to me. I have had more random people smiling at me in Hanoi than in so many other countries I have been to. Before I came to Vietnam, some people told me that it was not a very nice country for travellers. Nomadic Matt, the famous travel blogger, blogged about the same saying it was a terrible experience. But I wouod like to tell everyone that I have loved Vietnam so far, and maybe we should not let individual bad experiences cloud our judgement about a country.
