Arrived in Tallinn, capital of Estonia following a boat trip from Helsinki today. Im approaching the middle of nowhere fast! :) Staying in the old town, and arrived a few hours before the rest of the tour group, so got to see a few places, and for those chess-players among you, I got some photos of a Paul Keres Chess House (though, I think it is being used for draughts now) and a statue of the great man south of the old Town. Paul Keres is a famous (among chess players) Estonian Grandmaster who very nearly became World Champion in 1948, and was one of the leading Russian (hence World) chess players for many years after. Another place I visited was a wine museum started a few years ago. Before WWII, there was a winemaker who had a thriving wine business (He figured Estonians could enjoy getting drunk, rather than just getting drunk on vodka). However the Russians invaded, and only in 1991 did Estonia get their re-independence (they were independent in 1917 too). Anyway, the wine business packed up,and in 2009, one of the founders - who was then over 100 years old (!) came back to Tallinn, with original recipes, and paraphernalia from the time and the museum (they also are producing wine now) was started.
