Arsenal are ready to make Gonzalo Higuain their highest earner as they edge ever nearer a £22million deal for the Real Madrid striker. In another signal to long-disgruntled Gunners fans that the club is shedding the prudent approach to finances that has become synonymous with the post-Highbury era, the Gunners will meet Higuain’s £150,000-per-week wage demands as boss Arsene Wenger looks to turn his team into Premier League contenders again. That pay cheque will surpass current top earners Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski by a whopping £50,000, while the Argentina international’s fee will break the previous club record of £15m paid to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin four years ago. Higuain is desperate to leave the Bernabeu, having seen his first-team starts limited in recent seasons. And the 25-year-old, who has also been courted by Juventus, has admitted a move to north London appeals. Speaking earlier this month, he said: ‘There have already been offers and I hope that Madrid do the best for me and themselves. ‘Arsenal? They would suit me, I’m still young and I have goals.’
