Art for Democracy, ARTICLE 19 and Index on Censorship release Harlem Shake video to highlight the issue of political prisoners in Azerbaijan and call for the immediate release of those detained in connection with exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly. One month ago today, Azerbaijani youth activist Ilkin Rustemzade was detained by authorities in connection to his alleged involvement in a Harlem Shake video filmed in Baku. Rustemzade is charged with hooliganism, as well as disturbing public order, and has spent the last month in pre-trial detention pending his investigation. He has already served multiple sentences for his involvement in the organization of peaceful protests and is believed to be targeted by the Azerbaijani authorities for his grassroots activism.
