In April 1885, Vincent set out to produce his first masterwork, a painting to establish his reputation as an important artist. He knew that some would consider it unfinished or ugly, but he was intent on conveying the brutal reality of rural life--from the smoke-stained walls of the cottage to the dust-covered flesh of his models.
