Art sale expected to be a big hit BY LAUREL BLACK lblack@paducahsun Big-box stores wont be the only establishments benefiting from post-Thanksgiving sales this weekend. Hundreds of pieces by local artists are expected to fly off the shelves at the Paducah Area Painters Alliance, or PAPA, Gallery on Saturday. Many people come in, and theyll buy 25 or 30 (paintings) as gifts, Dwain Smith, president of PAPA, said. The year before last, we sold 350 paintings in 45 minutes. Even this years selection, which features more than 500 miniature paintings from PAPA members for $10 apiece, may sell out before the gallery closes at 5 p.m. Many of the pieces feature holiday themes, but there will be plenty of other subjects from which to choose. Theres everything under the sun, subject-wise, he said. And they (the pieces of art) will be whatever two-dimensional medium the artist works in. Proceeds from the sale go toward paying rent and utilities at the PAPA Gallery, located at 124 Broadway, Smith said. PAPA is a 501(c)3. Founded in 1991, the alliance is one of the oldest active arts organizations in the area, and it boasts about 100 members, Smith said. They meet the last Tuesday of every month at the gallery. You get to meet other artists who have like ideas and to share your particular knowledge, Smith said. Were just a real nice group. The members range from beginners to professionals. All pay dues of either $100 a year for showing members or $40 a year for non-showing members. Smith added that there is one other requirement. You have to come in and pretend like you like us, he joked. The sale starts at 10 a.m. and will run until the work sells out or the gallery closes at 5 p.m., Smith said.
