As Christmas approaches, you see a glimpse of true family dynamics unfolding. Quite a few spend it alone, and not always by choice. I realized a common variable at play, many are due from lack of forgiveness of yesteryear, yet we hold on to the damaging burden of hindering ourselves from this liberating behavior. True forgiveness means I am giving up my right to hurt you, in response to you inflicting pain on me. It does not readily happen overnight, nor bestowed because the person is deserving, rather the act of exempting one self from fostering its sequela. It discourages from nurturing a grudge, essentially demonstrating tabula rasa or wiping the slate clean. Forgiveness therefore is the ultimate act of love one imparts in the sacrament of penance.
