As I am nearing the end of this sitcom pilot editing gig, there - TopicsExpress

As I am nearing the end of this sitcom pilot editing gig, there are a few things I have learned that I would like to share. If you are an aspiring Film maker, Director, Producer, Executive Producer, Camera dude or any other title that is responsible for the film LOOKING right, here are some other titles/terms you should be familiar with: Editor - The Person that edits/cuts the footage you shot/taped so that it communicates what the Director desires. They adjust audio levels, do basic color correction, add titles and do SOME special effects. Colorist - Person that sets color theme/visual ambience of the footage. They do not JUST make whites look white and make blacks look blacker... They make the colors pop in major music videos. They give films the look and feel of certain time periods. They turn grey skies blue and muddy waters into clear oceans. They make footage shot on your camera phone look like a major motion picture. Visual Effects Artist - Person that does special effects on a computer. They remove things from the footage that should not have been there in the first place and add things you thought were already there naturally. They animate in 2D and 3D. They make explosions happen that never happened, create digital tornadoes and fires. They turn small towns into a metropolis. Foley Artist - This person adds sounds effects to a movie to enhance what was already there. They do it so well you dont know the difference. If a woman unzips a wallet/small purse, that zipping sound is recreated by the Foley Artist to boost and and depth to a sound. The sound is not usually there or loud enough because the sound guy on the project is focusing on recording the actors not the sound of a zipper. They add room noise and sounds that go on in everyday life that you would normally hear in the background. The above are just a few but they are specialized skills that people train in to make the big budget projects look and feel BIG BUDGET. ONE GUY with a laptop is USUALLY NOT going to equate to all of them. He may come close, but if you are wondering why your project make be lacking in looking like a BIG BUDGET project, think on the above.
