As I finish my first year as after-school site coordinator, I am amazed at what I have learned. The one main thing that has become even more apparent to me, more than ever before, is the difference that a teacher can make. My program was voluntary for the students. Although some students have to go at the wishes of their parents. The core group of students that we had every day enjoyed the activities in which they interacted with teachers that had a great rapport with them, in spite of whatever activity it was. I wish others could see what I saw last year as these children matured and grew under the direction of teachers that were not hampered by Common Core, High Stakes testing, or under the pressure to assess everything.
