As I reflect back on the funeral services today for Mr. John Holdman I felt very humbled and honored to be a part of paying respects to such a man who dedicated his life to service for this community through fighting fires, taking ambulance calls, attending sporting events, etc. As we worked on flowers for his services- his family had brought his fire helmet in to be worked in his casket spray and I couldnt help but think of how many times he had worn that to shield himself from danger to protect others! For those that attended his services, we were all touched by the final call of duty from dispatch for former Fire Chief Fireman No. 1 John C. Holdman over the radio and the presentation of his helmet to his family....the Bernice Voluntary fire dept and Asst. Fire Chief Jr Horton went above the call to pay respects and honor to him and his family! I am certain that Fire Chief Dannye Murphey(who was away on a mission trip to Yucatan) would have been proud as I am also proud that we have such people in this town that serve others!!!! In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore....hope everyone is ready!
